Mary Calo

Mary Calo is an elementary orchestra teacher at the Rocklin Unified School District. She most recently graduated from Ohio University in 2020 with a masters degree in music education, certificate in conducting, and certificate in music administration.

While at OU, Mary served as the graduate assistant on bassoon studying with Dr. Matthew Morris. Her music education studies were overseen by Dr. Matthew Talbert. Her responsibilities included teaching bassoon methods as well as teaching a non major music theory class. Ms. Calo served as principal bassoon in the University Symphony Orchestra as well as the bassoonist in the Ohio University Graduate Woodwind Quintet. After graduation, Mary moved to the Cleveland area, where she played second bassoon in the Strongsville Community Band. Ms. Calo also subbed in the Suburban Symphony, and taught bassoon lessons to local students.

Mary holds a master's degree in bassoon performance from Arizona State University (ASU) where she studied with Dr. Albie Micklich. At ASU Mary played in chamber ensembles as well as the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensembles. She played in operas such as Cosi fan Tutti. Before her studies at ASU she graduated from the University of the Pacific (UOP) in Stockton, California where she received a degree in bassoon performance. While at UOP she enjoyed performing in both the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Also while at UOP she was affiliated with the music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon and won the Mu Phi Epsilon Sacramento Alumni Chapter Competition in 2012.

Ms. Calo is an avid chamber musician and has attended festivals in Prague, Czech Republic and Siena, Italy. In both festivals she participated in woodwind quintets, reed trios, and duets. Most recently, she participated in a summer orchestra in Cartagena, Colombia in 2019. Her bassoon ensemble ventures include performing at the 42nd International Double Reed Society Concert in the summer of 2013 with her bassoon quartet and the University of the Pacific Bassoon Ensemble. The program included a unique piece by composer John Steinmetz entitled The Monster that Devoured Cleveland.

As an orchestral player Ms. Calo has played with numerous organizations in California. She has played second bassoon for the Stockton Symphony Orchestra, in which one of the performances she participated in was quoted in the Stockton Record as having

"crisp, rhythmic precision and an impressive dynamic range". She has also substituted in the Veridian Symphony, St. John's Chamber Orchestra, and for the Dean Lesher Theater of the Arts.

While living in San Diego from 2015-2018, Mary served as the bassoonist in the Philharmonic Wind Quintet, and contrabassoonist/3rd bassoonist in the La Jolla Symphony.
